Goa - Bar Bar Dekho

Ace photographer Atul Kasbekar tweeted :
Need to rediscover ability to laugh at oneself. Self serving religious zealots have effectively created a psychosis of fear and intolerance.  Let me start by making good natured fun of my own community then
"For the record the Goan state anthem is NOT - Bar Bar Dekho...;-)"

('Bar' in English refers to the  pub  and '
Dekho' in Hindi translates as 'To see')

Translating, 'Bar Bar dekho' as to go on a drinking spree.

Goa is better understood as the Las Vegas of India. What happens in Goa, stays in Goa.

While in college you slip to Goa without letting out a word of it - as most trips of that kind happen while you are trippin. No pre-planning, the only memories  are of, when you arrived in Goa and when you came back home.

What happened in between, would stay there or probably been scripted into an indie version of The Hangover trilogy.

With aging, the spirit of Goa calls with a more cautious note - you let out where you are headed to, do some sort of pre-booking at resorts and at least have a possible itinerary in your head for the time there.

To recollect one of my trips to Goa (to be at a time of internet penetration),  most of the to do stuff are on the accessible side of planning, while trippin.  This was supposed to be a vacation, hence decided it would be one.

The ideal vacation is one in which you don't do anything. Zilch.
  • You don't go sight seeing with a reason to click pics or to explore the unknown / well known sights. '
  • You don't go out and see happy couples cuddling, hippies smoking up or people drunk and freaking out.
  • You don't participate in the adventure activities at beach.
  • You are not in a hurry to suit up and go pub hopping at night, followed by marathon full-moon party at the beach.
Then what exactly do you do.

From the minute of arrival in Goa early in the morning, went ahead and did all the above in a day (The energy is peak at arrival and starting to breathe the Goan air). Been there, done that.

Spend the next days at a semi-private beach, idling at the beach side shack near the snooker table on a lazy chair. Left hand holding onto a cue stick, right holding the beer, foot rest on a beach football, munchies and a good read folded away on the table. Had asked for the best beer in the house served non-stop. From sunrise to sunset, just sit there doing nothing. No thinking.

At sunset, rise up, dodge the football with your friends all the way onto the beach - jump into the blue ocean and lay on the white sands till the stars come out and the doze off button calls on you.

Repeat the same for the next couple days, and the Goan vacation is complete.

Reflecting on Kasbekar's humorous side of the 'Bar Bar dekho' -  can one soak in the Goan sunshine without drinks?

Is it really possible to indulge in the Goan experience sans the drinking bit?
